HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team pounded out 29 hits and scored 21 runs to sweep a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata College Saturday, winning the opener 10-5 and capturing the second game 11-0.
The Greyhounds had six players with multiple hits in the opener led by senior left fielder Cameron Leon, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a homer. Senior first baseman Charles Savite and freshmen right field Mike Mittl, shortstop Evan Kulig and second baseman Tim Heard were each 2-for-4 with Kulig driving in two runs while senior third baseman Alex Bull was 2-for-5.
Freshman Rhett Jacoby improved to 6-2 on the mound for the Blue and Grey with his fifth complete game of the season. Jacoby allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk while recording five strikeouts to bring his season total to 49.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the opener on an RBI triple from Kulig, an RBI double off of Leon's bat, an RBI single from senior catcher Mike Roethke and an RBI triple from Mittl. The Hounds added four more runs in the top of the fourth frame for an 8-0 advantage. Mittl put down an RBI sacrifice bunt for the first run while freshman center fielder Austin Markowski had an RBI single. Savite added an RBI double, his 39th career double to move into a tie for fourth in school history, while Kulig ripped an RBI double as well.
The Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Moravian lead to 8-4. The Hounds added two runs in the top of the sixth when Bull led off with a single and Leon connected on a two-out, two run homer to left field, his third home run of the season. Juniata would get one run in the seventh inning before Jacoby got the final two batters to pop out to end the game.
Mittl paced Moravian at the plate in the second contest as he went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Freshman outfielder Chase Rogers was 2-for-3 with his first career home run while Roethke went 2-for-4 with a homer and Bull was 2-for-5 as he passed 50 hits for the season.
Sophomore Ryan Kahn earned his second straight win on the mound in the complete game shutout as he scattered three hits and walked none to go with seven strikeouts. Kahn faced just two batters over the minimum in the victory.
Moravian would give Kahn all the offense he needed with a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Savite. The Hounds added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Bull before breaking the game open with a six-run sixth inning. After two outs and a walk, Roethke connected on his first home run of the season to left field. Mittl followed with an RBI double before Rogers ripped a two-run homer to left field. Kulig drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.
The Hounds finished off the scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh. Mittl plated the first run with an RBI single, and the final two runs would cross the plate on errors by the Eagles' defense.
Moravian, now 16-18 overall and 10-7 in Landmark Conference action, and Juniata will close out their Landmark Conference series on Sunday, April 24 with a single game beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Huntingdon.
