MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College field hockey team has been selected sixth in the 2012 Landmark Conference season in a preseason poll selected by the conference's head coaches.
Defending Landmark Conference Champion The Catholic University of America was picked first in the poll with 60 points while Juniata College, which won the first four Landmark Conference titles, was second with 41 points. Drew University earned 33 points to finish third in the poll while The University of Scranton received 29 points to hold down the fourth position. Susquehanna University received 25 points for fifth place while Moravian had 16 points in sixth place and Goucher College rounded out the poll with 13 points.
The Greyhounds look to move forward with the progression the team has posted over the last few years and challenge for a spot in the 2012 Landmark Conference Tournament with nine returning starters and 14 returning letterwinners back for the 2012 season under the direction of head coach Amy Endler. Senior forward Briana Van Buskirk (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg HS) and sophomore midfielder Catherine Duffin (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown HS) will lead Moravian on the field after earning spots on the 2011 Landmark All-Conference Second Team. Van Buskirk led the Greyhounds in scoring last year with nine goals and four assists for 22 points while Duffin added six goals and three assists for 15 points. Senior defender Stephanie Pezzello (Holmdel, N.J./St. John Vianney HS) returns to anchor the defense, and she was on the 2010 Landmark All-Conference Second Team.
Moravian begins its 2012 season on Saturday, September 1st in a non-conference match at DeSales University beginning at 1:00 p.m., and the Greyhounds first match at Betty Prince Field will take place on Wednesday, September 5th versus Keystone College starting at 4:00 p.m. The 2012 Landmark Conference season will begin on Saturday, September 22nd as the Greyhounds travel to Catholic for a 1:00 p.m. start.
