Susquehanna Tops Catholic in Elimination Game at Landmark Conference Tournament
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The second seed Susquehanna University defeated third seed Catholic University of America, 4-2, in the final elimination game of the 2017 Landmark Conference Tournament hosted by Moravian College at Blue & Grey Field Sunday.
The River Hawks, now 27-14, advance to the championship round to play the host Greyhounds at 12:45 p.m. The Cardinals finish the season with a 27-14 mark.
Susquehanna collected 11 hits in the contest with junior second baseman Heather Pearson going 3-for-4. Junior third baseman Emilie Boman and sophomore first baseman Jackie Gore were each 2-for-3.
Catholic had seven hits with one each from seven batters in the lineup.
Senior Jamie Fesenstine improved to 12-7 in the circle for Susquehanna as she allowed two unearned runs on seven hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts.
Sophomore Kelly Lynch took the loss for the Cardinals after giving up four runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out two batters.
The River Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a one-out RBI single to right center field by sophomore right fielder Jill Ahrens that scored junior left fielder Leigh Ann Greenwald, who started the frame with a single.
Susquehanna extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Gore and Pearson.
Catholic would get on the scoreboard with two runs on the home half of the fifth to cut the River Hawks lead to 3-2. Senior second baseman Julie Keleti connected on an RBI single up the middle for the first run, and freshman pinch runner Marissa Wimmer raced home on an errant throw on a pick off attempt.
The River Hawks answered back in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single from junior second baseman Heather Pearson to make the lead 4-2.
