No. 2 Scranton Edges No. 3 Scranton in Landmark Tournament First Round
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The second seeded University of Scranton softball team broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth inning to earn a 2-1 win over third seed Susquehanna University in the opening round of the 2018 Landmark Conference Tournament hosted by Moravian College at Blue & Grey Field on Friday afternoon.
Scranton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first winning when freshman pitcher Jennifer Sweeney drew an intentional walk and scored on an error by the River Hawks.
Susquehanna answered with a run in the top of the second inning to knot the score at 1-1. Senior left fielder Leigh Ann Greenwald singled with one out and scored on an RBI single from senior catcher Kelly Miller.
The Royals retook the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman catcher Mackenzie Duffy drew a two-out walk and scored on an RBI double by Sweeney.
Susquehanna had a 6-4 advantage in hits with senior shortstop Brooke Kohler going 2-for-2 and senior left fielder Leigh Ann Greenwald going 2-for-3. Sophomore center fielder Megan Zinn was 2-for-3 for Scranton.
Sweeney allowed one run in seven innings with four walks and eight strikeouts while junior pitcher Alexa Gonzalez tossed a complete game for the River Hawks.
Scranton advance to the winner’s bracket game versus top seed Moravian at 3:30 p.m. Friday while Susquehanna will face fourth seed The Catholic University of America in the first elimination game on Saturday, May 5 with first pitch slated for 10:00 a.m.
