BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The third seeded Susquehanna University softball team scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn an 8-2 win over fourth seed The Catholic University of America in the first elimination game of the 2018 Landmark Conference Tournament being hosted by Moravian College at Blue & Grey Field Saturday morning.
The River Hawks, now 27-15 on the season, had six hits in the game with senior left fielder Leigh Ann Greenwald going 2-for-3. The Cardinals, who finish the regular season at 18-16, had eight hits with senior designated player Megan Colline going 2-for-2 with a homer and sophomore first baseman Sabrina Scott going 2-for-3.
The River Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior second baseman Heather Pearson led off with a double off the base of the left field foul pole and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Emilie Boman.
The Cardinals answered back and scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman left fielder Taylor Forgen led off the frame with a single before senior designated player Megan Colline ripped a two-run, two-out line drive homer to left center, her fourth home run of the season.
Susquehanna retook the lead with a seven-run fifth inning to take an 8-2 edge. Sophomore pinch hitter Ellen Smith had an RBI fielder’s choice to drive in the first run of the frame while Pearson connected on an RBI sacrifice fly. Senior shortstop Brooke Kohler hit an RBI fielder’s choice while Boman had a two-RBI single. Sophomore center fielder Kasey Bost ended the scoring with a two-run homer to left center field, her third home run of the season.
The River Hawks advance to the second elimination game to face the second seed The University of Scranton with first pitch at approximately 12:30 p.m.
