BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University field hockey team scored a pair of second half goals including the game-winner with just 1:48 to play as the Greyhounds defeated visiting Immaculata University, 2-1, in non-conference action on John Makuvek Field as the Hounds played at home for the first time in 2021.
How It Happened
- Moravian posted a 6-2 edge in shots in the first quarter but neither team was able to score in the opening 15 minutes of action, and the Hounds also had a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners
- The second quarter saw neither squad take a shot as the defenses kept the ball towards the middle of the field
- The Greyhounds broke onto the scoreboard just 50 seconds into the second half when freshman forward Sydney Anderson knocked in a crossing pass from sophomore midfielder Sarah Bietka
- The Mighty Macs needed just under three minutes to knot the match at 1-1
- Moravian scored the winning goal with just 1:48 remaining when junior midfielder Maddie Call drove a penalty corner insert from junior midfielder Emily Wells
- Immaculata had a chance to tie the game with a penalty corner called with just 3.8 seconds to go but Moravian would knock the pass away
Quotable
- "It feels great. It's really nice to be playing at home under the lights. It was a team win. We out-statted them in pretty much every category, and we were knocking and knocking. I knew it had to come; I was hoping it would come. So, it was a little bit of a relief once the ball finally got over the line," stated Head Coach Sarah Dalrymple
Inside the Numbers
- Junior goalie Brooke Wilkinson recorded a pair of saves for Moravian while sophomore defender/midfielder Onalee Long made a defensive save for the Hounds. Long now has two defensive saves this fall while Wilkinson has recorded 13 saves in three matches
- The goal for Anderson was the first of her career while Call's tally was the sixth of her career and third game-winning goal. Bietka picked up the first point of her Moravian career with the assist while Wells had her third assist of the season and fourth of her career
- The victory for Dalrymple is the first of her career on John Makuvek Field after her first season as Moravian's Head Coach was cancelled by the pandemic
