BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 10 and top seeded Moravian College softball team dropped a 5-2 decision to fourth seed The University of Scranton Friday in the opening game of the 2019 Landmark Conference Tournament at Blue & Grey Field.
The Greyhounds, now 31-6 on the year, will now need to come back through the elimination bracket on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. versus second seed The Catholic University of America, which fell to third seed Susquehanna University, 12-2 in five innings, in the other first round game on Friday.
The Hounds had nine hits in the game with senior left fielder Kat Spilman going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy also going 2-for-3. Freshman pitcher Alexandria Scheeler went 2-for-4.
In the circle, Scheeler allowed five runs on seven hits to go with one strikeout as she fell to 12-3 on the year.
Freshman second baseman Jessica Indelicato was 2-for-4 for the Royals while sophomore pitcher Jennifer Sweeney improved to 13-7 as she allowed two runs on nine hits and two walks.
The Blue and Grey jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore designated player Shannon Brogan connected on a two-out single, and junior right fielder Emily Stanilious followed with a double. Spilman then ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to bring in Brogan and Stanilious.
Scranton scored four times in the top of the fifth to move in front 4-2. Sophomore designated player Allie Hotchkiss had an RBI single, junior third baseman Casey DeSarno followed with an RBI double and Indelicato connected on an RBI ground out while the fourth run on the inning scored on an error.
The Royals finished off the scoring in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Maggie Donnelly.
