Greyhounds Outlast Scranton in Semifinals to Advance to the 2024 Landmark Conference Championship Match
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The second seeded Moravian University women’s tennis team outlasted third seed The University of Scranton for a 5-1 victory in a 2024 Landmark Conference Semifinal match at Hoffman Courts Thursday as the Greyhounds advance to the Landmark Conference Championship match for the fifth straight tournament.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The second seeded Moravian University women's tennis team outlasted third seed The University of Scranton for a 5-1 victory in a 2024 Landmark Conference Semifinal match at Hoffman Courts Thursday as the Greyhounds advance to the Landmark Conference Championship match for the fifth straight tournament.
How It Happened
- The Hounds held a 2-1 lead after the doubles action. The Royals earned the first point of the match with a victory at first doubles. The Blue & Grey evened the score at 1-1 with an 8-2 triumph at second doubles from the tandem of freshmen Leah Zolotareva and Sydney Shifman. Moravian moved ahead when the duo of seniors Gabby Martin and Emily Masters posted an 8-4 win at third doubles
- The Greyhounds earned points at the first three singles contests to finish to claim the victory. Senior Mara Stapleton made it 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth singles while Martin pushed the edge to 4-1 with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph at fifth singles. Sophomore Izzy Szmodis clinched the match with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory at second singles. Two of the other three singles contests that didn't finish were late in the third set
- The victory sends Moravian to the Landmark Conference Championship match for the fifth straight season that the tournament has been held, and ninth time overall. The Blue & Grey will face top seed Drew University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 in Madison, New Jersey
- The Greyhounds have won five Landmark Conference titles since the conference began in 2007-08, and the program has a total of 13 conference titles
