TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian University junior Tara Smurla has been honored as the Landmark Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for her performance last week.
Smurla finished fifth of the 67 runners in the Lehigh University Invitational Friday evening with a time of 22:30.5 on the 6,000-meter course to begin the 2024 season. Smurla's time was the second-fastest of her career The Hounds placed fourth of five teams in the meet.
"Tara had an incredible summer and it showed when she set our 'school record' in our time trial, and she's been consistently closing workouts in low 21-minute 6k pace, so we know she's ready to run fast," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann. "This race was over a minute ahead of what she ran 12 months ago at the same meet, so as the workouts and training kick in more throughout the fall, we trust this can be an appreciably better season for Tara than what was already a great 2023."
The Greyhounds are slate to return to action on Saturday, September 7 in the Lebanon Valley College Invitational at Union Canal Tunnel Park beginning at 10:15 a.m.
