Greyhounds Break School Record for Wins in a Season with 27
The Moravian College baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth inning to post a 5-3 non-conference win over DeSales University at Limeport Stadium Tuesday night as the Greyhounds won their 11th straight game and their school record 27th contest of the season.
The Moravian College baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth inning to post a 5-3 non-conference win over DeSales University at Limeport Stadium Tuesday night as the Greyhounds won their 11th straight game and their school record 27th contest of the season.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior second baseman Kenny Ridge led off with a walk and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by junior third baseman Jack Kavetski. Kavetski scored on an RBI single from senior catcher Doc Neiman while sophomore designated hitter Brian Mauro scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior outfielder Ronnie Wentz.
The Greyhounds would get a run back in the bottom half of the third on a two-out, solo homer by senior outfielder Jason Huber, pictured at right, his second home run of the season. The hit was the 150th of Huber's career, the fourth player in school history to reach 150 career hits.
Moravian would score four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Huber led off the inning with another solo home run down the left field line. Junior first baseman Kevin O'Keefe followed with a singled and moved to second on an error before an RBI double by senior outfielder Mike Zubia. After a ground out moved Zubia to third, he scored the go ahead run on an RBI single by senior third baseman Jon Baltz. Baltz crossed the plate with the final run of the game on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore.
Both teams had eight hits in the contest. Huber was two-for-four for Moravian with two RBIs, two runs and two homers while Baltz, pictured at left, was two-for-four. O'Keefe added ten putouts to break the single season school record with 286 putouts this season. Wentz led DeSales with a three-for-four performance.
Sophomore Robert Solano improved to 3-1 on the season, allowing three runs, just one earned, on seven hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in eight innings of action. Junior Kyle Longernecker earned his eighth save of the season, giving up a hit and striking out one in the final inning.
The Bulldogs used four pitchers with sophomore Colby Pacillo taking the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of action.
