Hounds Come Up Short in Overtime at Catholic

How It Happened
- The Hounds received the opening kickoff but would punt after three plays
- The Cardinals gained on first down before junior defensive back Antonio Bowen intercepted a pass to set the Moravian offense up at the Hounds' 40-yard line. However, three plays later, Catholic intercepted freshman quarterback Tommy Gontz to get the ball back
- Catholic's next possession ended on an incomplete pass on fourth down to give the Blue & Grey the ball at the Moravian 31-yard line
- Sophomore quarterback Declan McCarthy ran for 54 yards on the first play of the drive to get into the red zone. Moravian moved to first-and-goal before McCarthy was intercepted in the end zone
- The Cardinals turned the miscue into points on the first play of the second quarter with a 31-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead
- The Hounds would turn the ball over on downs again while Catholic punted on its next possession
- Moravian got into the red zone again on its next drive, but graduate student running back Joey Richmond was stripped on a rushing attempt to give the Cardinals the ball back
- The Blue & Grey defense held after the turnover, forcing a punt
- The Greyhounds drove 65 yards in 11 plays to get into the end zone as McCarthy found senior tight end Parker Miller with a one-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal. Sophomore Jack Corrigan connected on the extra-point to knot the score at 7-7 with 4:01 remaining in the first half
- Moravian took the lead three plays into the Cardinals drive when junior defensive back Aidan Lane intercepted a pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. Corrigan's PAT put the Blue & Grey up 14-7 with 3:11 to go in the second quarter
- The Cardinals punted after one first down while the Greyhounds picked up four first downs before the clock ran out on the first half with Moravian leading 14-7
- Catholic had the ball to begin the second half and punted after three plays while the Hounds gained three first downs before turning the ball over on downs at the Catholic 29-yard line
- The Cardinals punted again after three plays
- Moravian put together a seven-play, 78-yard drive that McCarthy capped off with a 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Gavyn Gennarelli on fourth down. Corrigan missed the extra point to set the score at 20-7 with 7:18 left in the third quarter
- Catholic drove into the red zone before turning the ball over on downs with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter
- The Blue & Grey picked up a first down before McCarthy was stripped of the ball on a sack. The Cardinals needed just one play to find the end zone with a 12-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 20-14 with just 12 seconds to go in the third quarter
- Moravian fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Catholic scored on an eight-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Cardinals had the extra-point blocked to knot the score at 20-20 with 14:54 to play
- The Hounds kept their next drive alive as Corrigan ran on a fake punt attempt for a first down. However, Moravian would end up punting after one more first down
- The rest of regulation saw both teams punting or turning the ball over on downs as the squads headed to overtime
- The Greyhounds got to the Catholic eight-yard line on their possession to start overtime before turning the ball over on downs
- The Cardinals needed four plays to find the end zone with a 14-yard touchdown pass to win the contest
Inside the Numbers
- The overtime game was the 13th for the Greyhounds since the rule was instituted in 1996, and the Hounds are now 9-4 all-time in overtime. Moravian's last overtime game was in 2021 when the program won two contests in overtime
- The Greyhounds' offense posted a season high 451 yards of offense including 278 yards passing and 173 yards rushing in the contest
- McCarthy completed a career-high 23-of-52 passes for 264 yards to go with two touchdowns and an interception, and he added a career-best 65 rushing yards on nine carries while Gontz was 2-for-5 for 14 yards with an interception
- Gennarelli caught six passes for 104 yards and a touchdown while junior wide receiver Avery Koser had four receptions for 78 yards. Senior wide receiver Knaheim Bragg grabbed three passes for 29 yards while sophomore wide receiver Josh Ludlow added three receptions for 24 yards to go with one kickoff return for 24 yards
- Graduate student tight end Jalen Jones had two receptions for 13 yards while Miller had one catch for a touchdown
- Sophomore Jed Bendekovits led the Moravian rushing attack with 73 yards on 15 carries to go with three receptions for 11 yards while senior running back Isiah Rico had 14 yards on two carries and one catch for 17 yards. Richmond finished with 11 yards on five attempts while senior running back had one carry and caught one pass
- Freshman running back Dorian Thomas returned three kickoffs for 40 yards to go with one reception for three yards and one rushing attempt
- Corrigan punted five times for an average of 41.8 yards and a long of 64 yards, and he gained ten yards on his lone rushing attempt while graduate student Kyle Weiss kicked off four times for an average of 55.3 yards with one touchback
- Senior defensive lineman Nathan Carr led the Hounds' defense with eight tackles including two tackles for loss and one and a half sacks while Lane made seven tackles with one for loss to go with his interception return for a touchdown
- Senior linebacker Ethan O'Neil also contributed seven tackles with a pass break-up while senior linebacker Clay Basile added six stops with one and a half for loss and a half a sack
- Sophomore linebacker Jack Tosh registered six tackles with one for loss and a half a sack to go with a pair of pass break-ups while senior defensive back Isaiah Johnson posted five tackles with one for loss and a pass break-up
- Freshman defensive back Kam White made four tackles with a pass break-up while sophomore linebacker Malachi McNeil-Harrison was credited with three quarterback hurries
- Bowen had one tackle to go with his interception while sophomore defensive back Antonio Rivera had two pass break-ups and two tackles
