Edwards Named Empire 8 Coach of the Year; Dickinson Selected to All-Sportsman Team
ROCHESTER, N.Y. --- Moravian College Head Men’s Golf Coach Kevin Edwards has been voted the 2014-15 Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year by the conference coaches, and junior Evan Dickinson earned a spot on the Empire 8 All-Sportsman Team.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. --- Moravian College Head Men's Golf Coach Kevin Edwards has been voted the 2014-15 Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year by the conference coaches, and junior Evan Dickinson earned a spot on the Empire 8 All-Sportsman Team.
"Being named the Empire 8 Golf Coach of the Year is a well-deserved honor for Kevin Edwards," commented Director of Athletics Scot Dapp. "He is a very knowledgeable coach and pushes his golfers to reach their potential every time they step on the course."
Edwards, who finished his fifth year as head coach and his sixth year on Moravian's staff, led the Greyhounds to a second place finish at the 2014-15 Empire 8 Championships, tying the program's best finish in the conference tournament since becoming an associate member in 2009. Moravian finished in the top five in 11 of 12 outings in 2014-15 including a first place in at the Alvernia University Invitational last October.
Edwards coached freshman Tyler Smith to Empire 8 Rookie of the Year honors, marking the first time a Moravian athlete has earned the recognition. Smith was the top freshman in the conference tournament, finishing in a tie for 10th place with a 72-hole total of 316 to also earn Second Team All-Empire 8 honors.
Edwards also coached Dickinson to Second Team All-Empire 8 accolades. Dickinson, who finished in a tie for sixth among the 38 golfers to play all four rounds, finished with a season average of 79.31 stokes per round. Dickinson was one of three Hounds to average under 80 strokes per round, joined by freshman Kevin Kunkle at 78.47 strokes and junior Jim Maru at 78.75 strokes, the first time in school history that three golfers shot under 80 for the season.
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2014-15 Men's Golf Sportsman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.
"No matter how Evan is playing he always conducts himself with great composure and class," commented Edwards. "He just goes out and plays the game without any complaints and doesn't put the blame on anything other than himself which is why I chose him as our Sportsman of the Year.
"I am very honored to be chosen by my peers as the Coach of the Year. The team and I are excited about next fall with the top seven averages returning plus three freshmen our future looks very good," finished Edwards.
