BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to visiting The Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference action Saturday on John Makuvek Field as the Greyhounds celebrated Senior Day and Homecoming.
The teams played a scoreless first half with the Hounds owing a 4-1 edge in shots. However, the Cardinals would end up scoring the lone goal of the contest just 53 seconds after the intermission. Moravian had a 10-4 edge in shots in the second half that included five on goal and another by senior forward Gabby Stelzmiller hitting the cross bar but the Blue and Grey could not find the equalizer.
Sophomore goalie Siobhan O'Sullivan-Evangelista recorded one save I the match.
Prior to the start of the contest, the Greyhounds honored seniors midfielder Shae Duka, defender Paige Kovacs, midfielder Aimee Manley, forward Gabby Stelzmiller and Gabby Nasta, who has spent the last two seasons working as an academic mentor with the freshmen class after playing two season for the Hounds.
"I'm really proud of our group of seniors," stated fifth-year Head Coach Jeff Ykoruk of the group that made up his first full recruiting class. They all have different personalities but within that they all have the same high standards on and off the field. Their commitment level to the program is amazing and second to none.
"Our younger players have no reason not to have somebody to look up to. Without their leadership, day in and day out, we wouldn't have a winning record at this moment" finished Ykoruk.
Moravian is slated to close out the 2018 regular season on Saturday, October 27 with a Landmark Conference match at Goucher College beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Greyhounds need to win the contest and have Elizabethtown College either tie or lose to Catholic to clinch a berth in the 2018 Landmark Conference Tournament that begins on Tuesday, October 30.
