TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian College women's cross country team has been picked to take home its second title in three years in the 2013 Landmark Conference preseason coaches' poll.
The Greyhounds received four first-place votes and 61 points while The Catholic University of America was picked second with 50 points and three first-place votes. The University of Scranton had the remaining first-place vote and 42 points to finish third in the poll.
"Our upperclassmen are coming into the season in the best shape of their lives," said third-year Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "Some of them are 8-9% faster than they were 12 months ago based on some of our preliminary fitness tests. They're ready to make some huge jumps from where they were last season…I've never seen our junior class run as well as they are so far this season. Additionally, our freshmen worked really hard in the offseason and they're already running much better than even I expected they would based on their high school PRs and what I anticipated when we were recruiting them.
"We're still a relatively young team, and as I've stressed to the team so far even I'm not entirely sure of what the ceiling is for them so our goals for the season will evolve. Much like last year, I feel like the conference is wide open for anyone to take. I'm just hoping we can be in the hunt by the time we get to the conference meet," Baumann finished.
The Greyhounds have six letterwinners back for the 2013 campaign and a total of ten runners on the roster.
Moravian opens the season at the Lehigh University Invitational on Saturday, August 31 starting at 10:00 a.m.
