UNION, N.J. --- The Moravian College baseball team began its 2019 season with a 5-2 loss at Kean (N.J.) University Tuesday afternoon.
Senior designated hitter/pitcher Evan Kulig led the Greyhounds at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, and he also tossed the first three innings of the year with a pair of runs, four hits and three strikeouts. Senior third baseman Tim Heard had a hit and an RBI double while senior left fielder Mike Mittl scored a run and had one hit. Junior catcher Ian Luberti had a hit and a walk in his two plate appearances while senior center fielder Austin Markowski added an RBI.
Senior Rhett Jacoby followed Kulig on the mound and allowed two runs, just one earned, on three hits to go along with a walk and five strikeouts. Senior Brendon Caraway allowed one run in his one inning of work on the hill while junior Connor Morro tossed the final inning with a walk.
The Cougars scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Hounds would plate a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to knot the score at 2-2. Mittl led off the frame with an infield single, and he moved over to third on a single by Kulig. Markowski followed with a safety squeeze bunt that scored Mittl as Markowski was thrown out at first base before Heard connected on two-out RBI double to left center field.
Kean scored again in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead, and the Cougars added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Blue and Grey would put a pair of runners on base in the top of the sixth inning as they looked to tie the game, but Kean would work out of the inning.
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Sunday, March 3 with the first game of the team's trip to the Snowbird Classic in Punta Gorda, Florida as the Greyhounds play Heidelberg (Ohio) University at 11:00 a.m.
