BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The top seeded Moravian College women's tennis team won the program's fourth Landmark Conference Championship with a 5-2 victory over second seed The University of Scranton Saturday at Lehigh University's Lewis Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds, now 19-1 on the season after their 14th consecutive win, won the program's first title since 2011 and earned an automatic berth to the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, the program's third trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Moravian, which has set a program record for wins in a season under first-year Director of Tennis Aaron Wilf, trailed 2-1 after the doubles action. The Royals, who led the Blue and Grey 3-0 after doubles when the teams met in the regular season, captured the first two doubles contests to finish before junior Eiman Nazif and sophomore Emma Angle posted an 8-5 victory at first doubles.
The Hounds would capture the first four singles matches to finish to capture the victory. Nazif was the first to come off the courts with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at second singles to even the team score at 2-2 before junior Lauren Steinert recorded a 6-0, 6-3 victory at fourth single to put Moravian in the lead for good. Emma Angle, who was selected as the Landmark Tournament's Most Valuable Player, posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at first singles to put the Blue and Grey on the verge of the title while sophomore Brooke Adams clinched the championship with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at fifth singles. In the postseason, a match is ended when one team reaches five points so the other two singles contests were left unfinished with sophomore Mary Angle at match point in the third set with a 2-6, 6-4, 5-1 score while sophomore Kristen Cassidy won her first set at sixth singles, 6-3, and trailed 0-2 in the second set then the match ended.
"This was a great win today for us against a really good Scranton team," stated Wilf. "I'm so proud of how our women's team competed not just today but all year. This is a special group of student-athletes and I'm thrilled that they can now call themselves champions."
