Bethlehem, Pa.--- The Moravian College women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday, with a sweep of the Owls of Bryn Mawr College, and falling 3-1 against the Cavaliers of Cabrini College.
The Greyhounds defeated the Owls in three sets 25-21, 25-20, and 25-16. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Kornmann led the team with 13 kills. Junior outside hitter Lauren Hostetler earned eight kills, two service aces and five kills, while fellow junior middle blocker Victoria Bobyak also posted eight kills. Junior setter Megan Szkolnicki had three kills and 33 assists while freshman outside hitter Mary Zacher put together seven kills, two assists and 13 digs for the sweep.
"We played very efficiently, passed a 2.4 and Meg really connected well with both middles who dominated the match," stated Head Coach Shelley Bauder after winning the first match of the day.
The Hounds would return to Johnston Hall for a point battle with Cabrini College. The Cavaliers would capture the first set 25-20. Kormann and Zacher posted four kills apiece while sophomore Jaclyn Smith and Bobyak tallied three kills in the set.
The Blue and Grey powered back taking the second set 25-19, but despite best efforts would drop the next two sets. Zacher led the Hounds with 15 kills and 17 digs. Kornmann added 10 kills and a block, while Bobyak had seven kills and a block. Freshman libero Jean Markovic had an outstanding defensive showing, posting 25 digs, but it wouldn't be enough as the Cavaliers took sets three and four, 25-16 and 25-20.
"Jean did a great job pushing them out of system with her serve and had an astounding 25 digs in the match. Mary had one of her best nights hitting, cranking out 15 kills and performing well on the defensive end with 17 digs," commented Bauder on the tough loss of the afternoon.
