The Moravian College men's tennis team, under the direction of first-year head coach Art Smith, is set to open its 2012 spring season this weekend with a pair matches versus Salve Regina University at the Falmouth Sports Center on Cape Cod.
The Greyhounds return five players from last year's 8-6 squad which played in the postseason for the fifth straight season after a 4-3 mark in the Landmark Conference regular season. Moravian's roster includes four seniors, a junior and a freshman this spring.
Senior Kevin Holze (Bayside, N.Y/St. Francis Prep HS) heads into his final season with a career mark of 40-22, which is fifth in school history in wins, and he has a 34-28 career doubles mark, which is seventh in the school record books for victories. During his career, Holze has played in the top four singles positions with a winning record in all slots, and he is 23-15 at second doubles over the previous three seasons. Holze was on the 2011 Landmark All-Conference First Team in singles action and Second Team in doubles while a Second Team honoree in 2009 in both singles and doubles and in 2010 in singles action.
Senior Drew Shreter (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown HS) enters the final campaign tied for sixth in career singles victories with a 37-24 record, and he is tied for fourth in the school record book in doubles wins with a career mark of 35-21. Shreter has seen action at third, fourth and fifth singles during his career with winning marks in each slot including a 15-10 mark at third singles, and he has a 17-11 mark at second doubles in his career. Shreter was on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team in doubles in 2011 as well as a freshman in 2009.
Senior Doug Morrow (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh HS) is a third four-year starter for Moravian. He is tenth in school history in doubles victories with a 30-20 career mark, including 24-13 at first doubles, and Morrow has a career 19-29 singles record while playing the top two spots in the lineup. Morrow was on the Landmark All-Conference First Team in doubles and the Second Team in singles in 2011, and he earned a spot on the First Team in doubles in 2009 and the Second Team after the 2010 season.
Senior David Chan (Macau, China/The Phelps School {Pa.} HS) is in his second year with the Greyhounds, and he won his only singles match in 2011. Junior Brad Kutcha (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park HS) is also in his second season with Moravian, and he posted a victory in his only doubles match last year. Freshman Lewis Cooper (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford HS) joins the Greyhounds this season after playing soccer for the school last fall.
Coach Smith looks for his team to challenge for its sixth straight postseason berth in late April. The squad will be stopping at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island on its way to Cape Cod for the season opening matches with Salve Regina. The Greyhounds will begin their 2012 Landmark Conference season on Wednesday, March 21st versus Drew University at Hoffman Courts.
