CARLISLE, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 slate with a 73-58 non-conference victory at Dickinson College Friday evening.
The Greyhounds were led by a trio of seniors with guard Maddie Capuano scoring a game-high 24 points to go with six rebounds and two steals. Forward Nadine Ewald and guard Karlie Brogan each had 11 points and seven rebounds with Brogan adding two blocked shots.
Sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel netted eight points to go with five rebounds and two assists while junior forward Jordan Beneducci tossed in eight points and had two rebounds. Freshmen guards Madison Amy and Morgan Amy each scored three points as did senior guard Brooke Santy with Morgan adding three rebounds and two assists and Santy grabbing two rebounds. Junior guard Sarah Donati added two points while freshman guard Jackie Kelly pulled down two rebounds in her first collegiate game.
Yoegel scored the first points of the game and the season before Ewald hit a pair of free throws for a 4-0 lead. A three-pointer and a lay-up from Capuano made it a seven-point game at 9-2 just two and a half minutes into action but the Red Devils would close within two points. Brogan would make a late jumper to give the Blue and Grey a 20-14 lead after the first quarter.
Dickinson started the second period by closing within three points before Capuano made it a 27-19 lead with a three-pointer at the 7:20 mark. The Red Devils would get within three-points at 27-24; however, another late jumper by Brogan sent the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 35-28 edge.
The Red Devils scored first out of the intermission before a three-pointer by Brogan ignited a 13-0 run by the Hounds with Morgan Amy pushing the lead to 48-30 with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter. The advantage reached 19 points, 53-34, on a lay-up by Capuano on a fast break, and the Blue and Grey held a 58-41 edge after 30 minutes of action.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Dickinson had closed within nine points at 59-50 before four points by Beneducci pushed the edge back to 64-50 with 2:54 remaining.
Moravian is slated to return to action on Saturday, November 16 when the squad travels to the 27th Annual Tyler Tip-Off Tournament at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts where the Greyhounds will play Maine Maritime Academy at 4:00 p.m.
