BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Seniors Brooke Santy and Mike Martino of the Moravian College basketball teams have been named to the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team at the organization's second luncheon of the 2019-20 season at DeSales University in on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Organization is made up of the six small college schools in the Lehigh Valley including NCAA Division II schools East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and NCAA Division III schools Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Moravian College and Muhlenberg College.
Santy, a senior guard for the Greyhounds, has helped the Moravian women open the year with an 8-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Landmark Conference action. Santy has contributed 13 rebounds, 10 points and 10 assists while seeing action in all 13 games with one start this winter. Santy, who has 52 points, 48 rebounds, 47 assists and 14 steals in 57 games at Moravian, is maintaining a 3.97 GPA while majoring in early childhood education.
"Brooke has been a tremendous team player over her four years both on and off the court for us," stated Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk. "She is one of our team captains this year, and will do anything that we ask of her including being a fine role model for her younger teammates and classmates. I am confident that Brooke will have an outstanding teaching career."
Joining Santy on the Scholar-Athlete Team were Ashley Polera of Muhlenberg, Isabel Caruso of DeSales, Tiffany Lapotsky of East Stroudsburg, Venus Cabrera of Cedar Crest and Zoe Zerman of Kutztown.
Martino, a senior guard, has been an important starter for the Greyhounds this season. He has played in all 13 games for the Greyhounds, who are 7-6 on the year and 2-0 in Landmark Conference action, and Martino is contributing 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 points per game while leading the squad with 56 assists and 25 steals in an average of 31.2 minutes per game. Martino, who is ninth in school history with 218 assists and has a career assist/turnover ratio of 2.3 (218 assists/96 turnovers), is majoring in secondary education with a focus in English while earning a 3.28 GPA. Martino was also selected to the Lehigh Valley Scholar-Athlete squad during the 2017-18 season.
"Mike has been a very integral part of our team this season," stated Head Coach Shawn Postiglione. "You won't see his name at the top of the stat sheet after a game but he is usually guarding the opponents top player, and he distributes the ball to his teammates extremely well. We're excited to see what the rest of the season holds for Mike and his teammates and know that Mike will have success as a teacher after his playing career ends."
Joining Martino on the Scholar-Athlete Team were Matt Gnias of Muhlenberg, Dat Lambert of DeSales, Michal Weiss of East Stroudsburg and Kyree Generett of Kutztown.
The next Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, February 18 at 11:30 a.m., where the LVSCB 2020 Team and the Pete Nevins Player of the Year awards will be announced.
