LEXINGTON, Ky. --- The American Volleyball Coaches Association released a record 622 colleges, including Moravian College, and high school volleyball teams that have earned the 2012-13 AVCA Team Academic Award.
The award, which began in 1992-93, honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average during the 2012-13 school year and passed last year's mark of 536 schools honored in 2011-12. Nominating coaches must be AVCA members.
Recipients of the award range from NCAA Division I institutions to high school girls' and boys' teams. The college ranks produced 369 schools that met the requirements for the award, while 253 high school programs earned the distinction. The breakdown of college representation includes 130 NCAA Division I schools, 77 NCAA Division II schools, 93 NCAA Division III schools, five NCAA men's programs, 46 NAIA schools and 16 junior college/community colleges.
Moravian, under the direction of head coach Shelley Bauder, earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the seventh time since the award was started. The Greyhounds and fellow Landmark Conference schools Juniata College and The University of Scranton received the honor.
"I'm extremely proud of my team for winning the AVCA Team Academic Award this year," Bauder said. "We strongly emphasize working hard on the court and in the classroom throughout the year, and I'm very happy for them that it paid off. Earning this award caps off an extremely successful 2012 season and puts us in a great mind frame as we enter the 2013 season this week!"
Coach Bauder and the Greyhounds will begin their 2013 season on Friday, August 30 when they host the 11th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational, a two-day, nine-team tournament in Johnston Hall and Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse. The team returns to campus on Friday, August 18 and starts practice the following day.
