Moravian Rallies to Top Drew in Overtime as Salvatore Becomes the Landmark Conference’s All-Time Leading Scorer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women’s lacrosse squad rallied from a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, scoring the tying goal with 9.6 seconds remaining before netting the winning goal 47 seconds into overtime for a 17-16 victory over visiting Drew University in Landmark Conference action Wednesday on John Makuvek Field as senior attack Jackie Salvatore became the conference’s all-time leading scorer.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse squad rallied from a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, scoring the tying goal with 9.6 seconds remaining before netting the winning goal 47 seconds into overtime for a 17-16 victory over visiting Drew University in Landmark Conference action Wednesday on John Makuvek Field as senior attack Jackie Salvatore became the conference's all-time leading scorer.
How It Happened
- The Rangers netted the opening goal just 1:11 into the contest, and the Hounds answered 19 seconds later as freshman midfielder Kathryn Hunsinger found the net. The squads would go back-and-forth, matching each other goal for goal in the first period as the teams were tied 6-6 after 15 minutes of action. Hunsinger added another goal for Moravian while Salvatore, sophomore attack Melissa Elefonte, senior midfielder Madi Dippel and freshman midfielder Ella Steirer all scoring one goal. Salvatore assisted on Elefonte's goal with 3:08 left in the quarter to give her 358 points on 173 goals and 185 assists as Salvatore broke the Landmark Conference career scoring record. Her 185 assists are also a Landmark Conference record
- The squad's traded goals to start the second quarter with senior midfielder Alex Cherenson scoring to make it 7-7 with 9:47 on the clock. The Rangers added two more goals to take a 9-7 advantage into the intermission
- Sophomore midfielder Bailey Leatherman scored just 49 seconds into the third quarter to pull the Blue & Grey within a goal before Drew scored again. Hunsinger tallied another goal while the Rangers scored twice to go up 12-9. Steirer contributed another goal, but once again Drew countered to take a 13-10 lead after 45 minutes of play
- Dippel and Salvatore had goals to start the fourth quarter to pull the Hounds within a goal at 13-12 only to see the Rangers score twice to push the edge back to 15-12. Moravian countered with goals from Cherenson, Leatherman and Dippel to tie the match for the eighth time at 15-15 with 4:52 to go. Drew netted the go-ahead goal with 2:12 on the clock before Elefonte scored an unassisted goal with just 9.6 seconds remaining to force overtime
- Salvatore earned the draw control to start the extra session, and Cherenson netted an unassisted goal on the first shot of the overtime for the win
- The overtime win is the second of the season for the Greyhounds and their third straight dating back to last spring
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had seven players register points with Dippel leading the way with five points on three goals and two assists to go with nine draw controls
- Cherenson and Hunsinger each netted two goals with Cherenson causing two turnovers and Hunsinger grabbing three draw controls
- Salvatore had two goals and two assists to push her Landmark Conference record to 360 points, and she also registered her second straight 100-point season, now with 101 points in 2025. Salvatore also added three draw controls and a pair of ground balls
- Elefonte also contributed two goals and two assists with two ground balls while Leatherman and Steirer each netted two goals
- Junior goalie Kayla Graef made eight saves in the opening 42 minutes of action while sophomore goalie Elle Burd had three stops in the final 19 minutes for her first victory of the season
- Graduate student defender Keara Reilly posted two caused turnovers while freshman defender Lillian Marino had two ground balls
- The Hounds were 12-for-16 on clearing attempts and scored four goals with a player advantage and another while down a player
