#23 Greyhounds Defeated Scranton in Opening Round of Landmark Conference Double-Elimination Tournament
The 23rd-ranked and top seed Moravian College softball team opened the 2011 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament at Blue & Grey Field Friday with a 7-1 victory over fourth seed The University of Scranton.

Moravian advances to the winner's bracket game at 3:00 p.m. versus the winner of the Susquehanna University versus The Catholic University of America game that begins at 1:15 p.m.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman outfielder Miranda Sergas, pictured at right, hit a one-out single and scored on a two-out single from sophomore third baseman Shannen Mohr.
The Royals threatened in the top of the second when sophomore Kristen Williams led off with a single and junior shortstop Kelly Zaccheo doubled with one out to put runners at second and third, but Scranton was unable to score after a pair of ground outs.
Moravian added five runs in the bottom half of the second for a 6-0 lead. Senior outfielder Amanda Paulus started the inning with a walk, and freshman catcher Cassie Ernst reached on a pop fly that fell in the infield for a single. Sophomore first baseman Amanda Dizinno put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, and after another out, senior second baseman Stephanie Falzarano hit an RBI single to score Paulus. Sergas followed with a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Ernst and Falzarano. Freshman designated player Taylor Mihalik then connected on an RBI triple that rolled to the fence in right center, and she scored on a throwing error on the play.
Scranton would get on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third to cut Moravian's lead to 6-1. Senior outfielder Mia Collarini and sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Frazza had back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Collarini scored on a fielding error by the Greyhounds on a ball hit by Williams.
Collarini would lead off the top of the fifth with a double for Scranton, her third hit of the game, but Moravian sophomore pitcher Alyssa Fegely came into the game and struck out three batters to strand Collarini at second.
The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the fifth to push their lead to 7-1. Mohr doubled with one out and sophomore pinch runner Samantha Mulderig scored on a two-out RBI double from Paulus.
Moravian had a 9-6 edge in hits in the game with Sergas going two-for-three with two runs and two RBIs. Falzarano was two-for-four with an RBI while Mohr was two-for-three with an RBI. Collarini had half of Scranton's hits, going three-for-four.
Junior Jenna Carmon earned her 12th win of the season in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing an unearned run on six hits to go with three strikeouts in four-plus innings of action. Fegely struck out seven of the ten batters she faced and allowed a walk in three innings of relief work to earn her first save of the season.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Boccolini took the loss for the Royals to fall to 7-7 after giving up seven runs, six earned on eight hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings of action. Junior Christine Capalbo pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for Scranton with two strikeouts and a hit.
