#18 Greyhounds Earn 30th Victory in Split with DeSales
The 18th ranked Moravian College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at DeSales University Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-2 in the opener and winning the second game 6-1.
The 18th ranked Moravian College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at DeSales University Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-2 in the opener and winning the second game 6-1.
The win in the second game was the 30th of the season for the Greyhounds, their 11th straight 30-win season under 18-year head coach John Byrne.
In the opener, Moravian took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Freshman designated player Cassie Ernst drew a walk to start the inning, and sophomore first baseman Amanda Dizinno, pictured at right, followed with a single. After an out, freshman outfielder Melissa Cottone hit an RBI single to score Ernst. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Fegely followed with another RBI single to plate Dizinno.
The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Designated player Laura Pironi hit a two-RBI double while shortstop Kate Steiner had an RBI single.
DeSales would add a run in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-2 lead when Steiner scored on a Moravian error.
Moravian had an 8-6 edge in hits in the first game with Fegely going two-for-three for the Greyhounds. Outfielder Christine Petrilla was two-for-two to lead DeSales while Pironi was one-for-three with a pair of RBIs.
Fegely fell to 8-3 in the circle, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts. Jen Lococo improved to 7-5 for DeSales after giving up two runs on six hits and a walk to go with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Katie Morrissey earned her first save of the season, giving up two hits and striking out five batters in 2 2/3 innings.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the second game. Steiner led off with a single, stole second base and scored on an RBI single from Lococo.
The Greyhounds tied the game in the top of the third when senior outfielder Amanda Paulus led off with a solo homer, her team leading fifth home run of the season.
Moravian would score five times in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Sophomore pinch hitter Brook Kowal drew a walk to start the inning and senior shortstop Maura Agnew came back in to run. Sophomore outfielder Samantha Mulderig reached on an error that allowed Agnew to score, and senior second baseman Stephanie Falzarano hit an RBI double to score Mulderig. An error on a single from freshman outfielder Miranda Sergas scored Falzarano and put Sergas on third for an RBI sacrifice fly from Paulus. Sophomore third baseman Shannen Mohr finished the scoring with a solo homer, her second home run of the season.
The Greyhounds had a 9-5 advantage in hits with Paulus going two-for-three with two RBIs. Junior designated player Jenna Carmon was two-for-four for Moravian.
Senior Elizabeth Python, pictured at right, improved to 11-0 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on five hits and a walk to go with seven strikeouts. Morrissey took the loss, giving up five runs, only one earned, on four hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of relief action.
