#25 Moravian Splits Double-Header with #23 TCNJ
The 25th-ranked Moravian College softball team and 23rd-ranked The College of New Jersey split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday with the Greyhounds winning the opener, 3-0, behind a no-hitter by junior Jenna Carmon, pictured at right, and the Lions winning the nightcap, 6-0, as both teams played their first games since triple to Florida for Spring Break.
The 25th-ranked Moravian College softball team and 23rd-ranked The College of New Jersey split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday with the Greyhounds winning the opener, 3-0, behind a no-hitter by junior Jenna Carmon and the Lions winning the nightcap, 6-0, as both teams played their first games since triple to Florida for Spring Break.
In the first game, Moravian would get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. Senior outfielder Maura Agnew singled with one out, and she moved to second on a bunt single by sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus. Senior shortstop Stephanie Falzarano followed with an RBI double to score Falzarano. The run was the first of the season allowed by TCNJ pitcher Lauren Fitzsimmons, who had gone 35 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
The Greyhounds added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh for a 3-0 lead. Paulus hit a one-out double and scored on another RBI double from Falzarano. Freshman designated player Taylor Mihalik would connect on a two-out, RBI single to score Falzarano.
Moravian had a 9-0 advantage in hits in the opener with Agnew going two-for-three.
Falzarano and Mihalik were both two-for-four the Greyhounds.
Carmon improved to 4-1 in the circle for Moravian allowing a walk in her first career no-hitter. Fitzsimmons gave up three runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts as she dropped to 5-1 on the year.
In the second game, TCNJ jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Ashley Sogluizzo had an RBI double in the inning while first baseman Caitlin Seamster hit an RBI single.
The Lions added two more runs in the second on an RBI sacrifice fly from Sogluizzo and an RBI single by outfielder Liz Huttner.
TCNJ pushed its lead to 6-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth on RBI doubles by outfielder Crystal Lee and Sogluizzo.
The Lions had a 9-4 edge in hits in the second game with Lee and Sogluizzo each going two-for-three. Falzarano was two-for-three for Moravian while senior outfielder Olivia Evanko went two-for-two.
TCNJ pitcher Alex Carisone improved to 3-0 after giving up four hits and a walk while striking out eight batters. Greyhound sophomore Alyssa Fegely allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out two and falling to 2-2 on the year.
