Moravian Comes Up Short Versus Catholic
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women’s basketball team nearly rallied from a six-point fourth quarter deficit before falling to visiting The Catholic University of America, 64-62, in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened
- The Greyhounds opened the scoring when sophomore guard Kylie Cabana put back an offensive rebound for a basket on Moravian's first possession. The Blue & Grey led 4-2 and 6-5 after jumpers from sophomore guard Ellie Wallbillich before the Cardinals opened a 9-6 edge. Senior guard Jayda Cartagena drained a jumper, a three-pointer and a lay-up to put the Hounds on top, 14-9, at the end of the first quarter
- Wallbillich hit lay-up to make it 16-9 early in the second quarter, and Moravian led 22-14 at the 6:35 mark on a pair of free throws from Wallbillich. Catholic countered and tied the contest at 23-23 before senior guard Juliana Vassallo sank a jumper for the Blue & Grey. Vassallo made two free throws for a 27-25 edge before the Cardinals knotted the score at 27-27 at the intermission
- Catholic began the second half with four points while Cabana sank two lay-ups to tie the game again at 31-31 at the 8:30 mark. Moravian moved back in front, 34-33, on a jumper from senior guard Lizzie Lustig while the Cardinals retook the lead. The Greyhounds got within a point late in the quarter as sophomore guard Megan Elias sank a jumper to make it 43-42 after 30 minutes of action
- Junior forward Lanie Herbert scored the first points of the fourth quarter on a lay-up as Moravian took a 44-43 edge. Catholic moved back in front, but the Hounds kept it close, never getting more than six points behind, down 62-56, with two minutes to go. Freshman guard Abby Hayes sank a three-pointer with 55 seconds left, and she added a free throw with six seconds remaining to make it 62-60. The Cardinals tacked on a free throw before Elias drained a shot from the corner that looked to tie the game at 63-63 with 1.4 seconds left; however, an official review showed that Elias' foot was on the line making it just a two-point shot and giving the Cardinals the win
Inside the Numbers
- Elias led the Greyhounds with 16 points, three assists, two steals and one rebound
- Wallbillich finished with 12 points and three boards while Cabana contributed a career high nine points and three boards
- Cartegena added seven points off the bench and one rebounds while Lustig had a seven rebounds to go with three points
- Vassallo posted one steal and six points while Hayes and Herbert each totaled four points in the contest
- Junior forward Grace Steffen grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with one point
- The Hounds shot 23-for-57 from the field (40.4 percent), 2-for-12 on three-pointers and 14-for-20 at the foul line
- The Blue & Grey did force the Cardinals into 23 turnovers while committing just 19 miscues
