Moravian Falls to Catholic in Landmark Conference Tournament First Round

How It Happened
- The Cardinals netted the first seven points of the game before senior guard Jayda Cartagena netted a three-pointer at the 7:48 mark for the Greyhounds. Junior forward Lanie Herbert added a lay-up to get the Blue & Grey within two points. Catholic had an 11-7 lead when Moravian ran off six straight points to take a 13-11 edge on a driving lay-up from sophomore guard Ellie Wallbillich with 3:36 left in the period. Senior guard Lizzie Lustig connected on a turnaround jumper for a 15-13 advantage while the Cardinals added a lay-up to knot the score at 15-15 after ten minutes of action
- Sophomore guard Kylie Cabana sank two free throws to begin the scoring in the second quarter for a 17-15 edge, and Cartagena drained another three-pointer to push the advantage to 20-16 just over a minute and a half to the period. Sophomore guard Mallory Elias added a three-pointer to give the Hounds a 23-18 lead while a jumper from Lustig pushed the edge to 27-21 with 5:14 on the clock. The Cardinals netted seven points to move back ahead 28-27 before sophomore guard Megan Elias hit a pair of free throws to put Moravian up 29-28. Senior guard Juliana Vassallo connected on a driving lay-up to tie the contest at 33-33 with 1:32 left in the half; however, Catholic scored five points in the final minute of the quarter to take a 38-33 edge into the intermission
- Herbert began the third quarter with a lay-up, and another Herbert lay-up had the Hounds down 40-37 two and a half minutes into the period. Moravian still trailed by three points, 44-41, after two free throws from Cartagena with 6:12 on the clock before a 10-0 run by the Cardinals pushed the Catholic advantage to 13 points at 54-41 with just under two minutes left in the quarter. Lustig added two jumpers, but the Cardinals led 59-45 after 30 minutes of action
- Catholic kept its advantage in double digits throughout the fourth quarter. Moravian shot 11-of-12 at the foul line in the period
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had three players score in double digits led by Lustig, who had 17 points to go with eight rebounds and a pair of assists
- Vassallo netted 13 points to go along with eight boards and two assists while Herbert posted her third straight double-double and sixth of her career with 10 points and 13 rebounds
- Cartagena finished with eight points, three boards and a pair of steals while Wallbillich recorded six points, four rebounds and two assists
- Megan Elias added four points, six rebounds and two assists while Mallory Elias had three points
- Cabana and freshman guard Abby Hayes each tossed in two points
- The Hounds shot 18-for-61 from the field (29.5 percent), 4-for-16 beyond the three-point line and 25-for-26 at the foul line
- The Blue & Grey held a 45-44 edge on the boards
