Vassallo’s Late Three-Pointer Caps 20-Point Comeback as Moravian Rallies Past Drew
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women’s basketball team trailed visiting Drew University by 20 points with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter before rallying back for a 75-74 victory on a three-pointer by senior guard Juliana Vassallo with just 0.8 seconds remaining in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.

How It Happened
- The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a jumper from sophomore guard Kylie Cabana on the Blue & Grey's first possession. The Rangers hit a pair of three-pointers to take a 6-2 edge, and Drew maintained an advantage throughout the rest of the quarter to lead 21-15 after ten minutes of action
- The Hounds closed within three points at 23-20 on a three-point play by Cabana just 45 seconds into the second quarter before the Rangers ran off ten straight points to stretch the edge to 33-20 two minutes later. Drew held onto the lead for the rest of the half to head into the intermission up 46-32
- The Rangers continued to extend the lead early in the third quarter, leading 58-38 with 5:02 on the clock. Vassallo connected on a three-point play and sank a three-pointer to make it 58-44, and junior forward Lanie Herbert added a basket to get Moravian within 12 points at 58-46 a minute and a half later. Vassallo added seven more points, and Herbert hit another bucket as the Hounds got the deficit down to seven points, 62-55, with 1:25 left in the third quarter. Neither team managed to score the rest of the period
- Freshman guard Abby Hayes connected on a three-pointer for the first points of the fourth quarter to get the Blue & Grey within four points, and sophomore guard Ellie Wallbillich made it a two-point game at 62-60 on two free throws with 8:37 on the clock. The Rangers tossed in five points to push the edge back to seven points. Moravian eventually made it a two-point contest again at the 4:26 mark at 70-68 on a jumper from Wallbillich. Senior guard Lizzie Lustig hit two jumpers with the second closing the gap to a point at 73-72 with 23 seconds to go
- Drew would miss three of four free throws before the Hounds started the final possession with nine seconds remaining. The Rangers had three fouls to give that took the clock down to five seconds. On the next inbounds pass, senior guard Jayda Cartagena found Vassallo coming in front of the Moravian bench, and Vassallo banked in a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds to go as the Greyhounds took a 75-74 edge. Drew would get a last attempt off after a timeout, but the shot missed to give the Blue & Grey a victory that tied the squads for fifth in the Landmark Conference standings with one game remaining
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had four players score in double figures led by Vassallo, who totaled 23 points to go with two assists
- Wallbillich netted 12 points with seven boards and one assist while Herbert contributed a double-double with 10 points off the bench and 10 rebounds to go along with one assist and one block. It was Herbert's fourth career double-double and first this season
- Hayes and Cabana each totaled eight points with Cabana grabbing three rebounds and Hayes adding two boards
- Cartagena posted six points, two rebounds and a pair of steals while sophomore guard Megan Elias and Lustig both had four points and two rebounds with Elias dishing out three assists and Lustig adding two steals
- The Hounds shot 31-for-66 from the field, 5-for-15 on three-pointers and 8-for-10 at the foul line, and the Blue & Grey forced the Rangers into nine turnovers
- Moravian held a 36-30 edge on the points in the paint and 13-9 points off turnovers advantage
