Student-Athlete Spotlight: Marielle Paniagua Stays Grounded in the Midst of the Grind
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — For sophomore defensive specialist Marielle Paniagua, volleyball started by chance…but staying grounded in it has been a much more intentional journey.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — For sophomore defensive specialist Marielle Paniagua, volleyball started by chance…but staying grounded in it has been a much more intentional journey.
She first picked up the sport at eight years old during a Girl Scouts tournament, introducing something entirely new to her family. That early experience soon evolved into a deeper passion, strengthened by the chance to play alongside her sister.
Now at Moravian University after transferring from Juniata College, Paniagua brings more than just experience to the program; she brings perspective.
Her first experience with college athletics showed her how easy it is to lose yourself in the demands of the sport.
"It's so easy to get caught up in volleyball and school that you forget what keeps you being you," she said.
That realization has shaped how she approaches both her life and her game. At Moravian, Paniagua has built a routine centered on structure and self-discipline. Early morning practices, classes, extra reps, and workouts fill her day, leaving little room for error in time management.
But for Paniagua, success is directly linked to staying grounded.
"I feel like we get so overwhelmed with everything surrounding us that we forget the biggest part," she said. "It doesn't matter how good you are; if you're not mentally prepared, you're not going to get anywhere."
To maintain that balance, Paniagua turns to journaling and her faith, using both as tools to reset mentally and regain perspective in the middle of a demanding schedule. That mental clarity has become a key part of her development as an athlete.
As she continues to integrate into Moravian's program, Paniagua has also embraced the responsibility that comes with being part of a team. In a sport built on constant communication and trust, she believes impact goes beyond individual performance.
"Even if you're not having a good game, just being a good teammate adds something instead of subtracting," she said.
That mindset reflects a broader shift in how she defines success, not just through performance, but through consistency, effort, and presence.
Looking ahead, Paniagua remains focused on growth and finding her place within a program that is continuing to gain momentum. With recent postseason appearances and a focus on both athletic and academic success, Moravian Volleyball is building a competitive foundation, and Paniagua's approach aligns directly with that trajectory.
For younger athletes, her message is rooted in authenticity and discipline:
"Work hard for yourself and not for other people…and don't brag about it. Let your work speak for itself."
For Paniagua, that work is about more than volleyball. It's about becoming the person she wants to be, both on and off the court.
