Moravian Splits Doubleheader with Catholic to Open Landmark Conference Slate
COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- The Moravian University baseball squad split a doubleheader with host The Catholic University of America to begin the 2025 Landmark Conference season Saturday with the Greyhounds winning the opener, 6-5, and the Cardinals taking the nightcap, 7-0, at the University of Maryland’s Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

How It Happened – Game #1
- The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Graduate student designated hitter Cole Cherkas connected on a solo home run to right center, his second homer of the season and tenth of his career to become the ninth Greyhound to reach double digits in career home runs
- The Cardinals got onto the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to take a 2-1 edge
- The Blue & Grey answered right back in the top of the fifth inning with a run to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman shortstop David Vozzo drew a one-out walk and raced around the bases on an RBI double to right field from Cherkas
- Catholic pushed two runs home in the bottom of the fifth frame for a 4-2 advantage
- The Greyhounds answered again in the top of the sixth inning two runs to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore right fielder Matt Westcott led off with a double before freshman catcher Ronnie Werkheiser connected on a one-out, two-run homer to left field, his second home run of the spring
- Moravian moved ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Senior left fielder Nick Henry drew a leadoff while Cherkas reached on a fielder's choice with two outs. Sophomore Domenic Venini came in to pinch run before sophomore first baseman Wyatt Harrar ripped a two-RBI triple down the right field line to score Henry and Venini
- The Cardinals got one run back in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring in the opener
- Junior Ross Huffman started on the mound for the Greyhounds, and he had one strikeout in 4.1 innings of action. Sophomore Nate McBride tossed a third of an inning while freshman EJ Youngling pitched 1.1 innings with a strikeout. Senior Brandon Holzinger tossed a third of an inning before senior Matt Snyder came in to finish off the final 2.2 innings with three strikeouts as he improved to 5-0 on the season
How It Happened – Game #2
- The Cardinals opened the second game with a run in the bottom of the first inning, and Catholic added five runs in the second frame for a 6-0 edge
- Catholic plated another run in the bottom of the fourth to push the advantage to 7-0
- Freshman Andrew Sagrestano made the start on the hill, and he had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work while freshman Jack Steinel posted five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of relief. Sophomore Ryan Grill tossed the final inning of the contest
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had 12 hits in the doubleheader with Cherkas going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run, a homer and a double
- Werkheiser contributed two hits, two RBIs, a run and a homer while Harrar added a hit, a triple and two RBIs
- Henry, Vozzo and sophomore right fielder Matt Westcott all registered a hit and scored once
- Senior catcher Connor Wengryn, freshman third baseman Troy Rabosky, freshman second baseman Nathan Jones and freshman center fielder Luke Keitsock each had one hit
