TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian University senior third baseman Sydney Andrews and senior pitcher/right fielder Sarah DeStefano have been selected as the Landmark Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for their performances last week.
The duo helped the Greyhounds to a 4-0 week in Landmark Conference action including sweeps of Drew University and The Catholic University of America as Moravian moved into first place in the standings with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Andrews posted a .538 average for the week as she went 7-for-13 with five runs, two RBIs, two doubles and a triple. She added a pair of walks for a .600 on-base percentage to go with an .846 slugging percentage, and Andrews recorded a putout and 12 assists in 13 chances in the field. She hit safely in all four games during the week as Andrews went 4-for-8 with three runs and a triple versus Drew, and she was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs against Catholic.
"Sydney had a great week on both sides of the ball," noted Head Coach Josh Baltz. "Offensively, she competes with great passion and consistently gives us quality at-bats. Defensively, she's been outstanding and wants the ball in the biggest moments, which says a lot about her confidence and leadership."
DeStefano, who earned her second Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week honor of the spring, went 2-0 in the circle with a 0.50 ERA, a shutout and 12 strikeouts in 14 innings. She scattered four hits to go with seven strikeouts over Drew, and DeStefano added five strikeouts versus Catholic. At the plate, DeStefano hit safely in all four games with a .429 average as she went 6-for-14 with a triple, two runs and six RBIs, and she had six putouts and five assists in 12 chances in the field during the week.
"Sarah had another outstanding week, contributing in the circle, defensively, and offensively," stated Baltz. "Since returning from Florida, she's thrown 54 innings and allowed just three earned runs. She's pitching with a lot of confidence right now and gives us a great chance to win every time she takes the ball."
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 15 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The University of Scranton beginning at 3:00 p.m.
