No. 11 Greyhounds Win Two Games on First Day at The Spring Games including Victory over No. 20 Case Western Reserve
CLERMONT, Fla. --- The No. 11 Moravian University softball team won a pair of games Monday to start its week at The Spring Games in Florida as the Greyhounds defeated Alfred (N.Y.) University, 18-2, and No. 20 Case Western Reserve University, 6-3, at Hancock Field.

How It Happened – Alfred
- The Hounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman left fielder Natalie Chloros drew a leadoff walk, stole second and raced home on an RBI single by senior catcher Marcie Silberman. Junior right fielder Kyra Holtje singled and senior shortstop Samantha Derickson reached on a fielder's choice before freshman designated player Shauna McNamee ripped a two-RBI double to bring in Holtje and Derickson. Sophomore first baseman Kaley Hoffman added an RBI single to bring in McNamee
- The Saxons got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a solo home run
- The Blue & Grey answered with a run in the top of the third to extend the edge to 5-1. Silberman led off with a single before Holtje was hit by a pitch. Hoffman eventually hit an RBI infield single to score Silberman
- The Greyhounds added a run in the fourth inning for a 6-1 advantage. Junior center fielder Shayla Morgan drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI double from senior third baseman Sydney Andrews
- Moravian scored twice more in the top of the fifth frame to extend the lead to 8-1. Derickson led off with a walk while McNamee singled and Hoffman walked to load the bases. Sophomore pinch hitter Amelia Noll connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to score Derickson while Chloros had an RBI single that brought in McNamee
- Alfred scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to set the score at 8-2
- The Hounds tacked on ten runs in the top of the sixth to make it 18-2. Senior right fielder Madison Berning hit a one-out single and Derickson followed with a double. Berning raced home on an error on a ball hit by McNamee. Hoffman drew a walk to lead the bases while senior pinch hitter Emma Wariwanchik connected on a two-RBI double to score Derickson and junior pinch runner Cassandra Farrell. Morgan added an RBI single to bring Hoffman home. Sophomore pinch hitter Julie Zook hit an RBI single to score junior second baseman Emma Grace Pachkowski while sophomore catcher Sydney Scarpato added a two-RBI single that brought in Morgan and Zook. Freshman pinch hitter Nicole Giglio reached on an RBI fielder's choice as Andrews scored while Scarpato raced home on an error. Giglio scored the final run of the game on an RBI triple off Farrell's bat
- Senior Sarah DeStefano made the start in the circle for Moravian and recorded three strikeouts in five innings of action while senior Natalie Otto had one strikeout in the final inning
How It Happened – Case Western
- The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning
- The Greyhounds countered with four runs in the bottom of the first to move ahead 4-1. Chloros led off with a double while Andrews walked and Holtje reached on an error. Derickson followed with a grand slam to clear the bases. The Blue & Grey loaded the bases again but we unable to score again
- Case Western got a run back in the top of the second frame to cut the Hounds' edge to 4-2
- Moravian answered in the bottom of the second with a run to restore its three-run lead. Holtje drew a two-out walk, and she raced around the bases on an RBI double from Derickson
- The Spartans scored once in the top of the sixth to make it a 5-3 contest
- The Hounds countered again in the bottom half of the frame. Morgan reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on an error. She touched the plate on an RBI single by Silberman for a 6-3 advantage
- Holtje made the start in the circle and posted a pair of strikeouts in the complete game victory
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian registered 23 hits on the day with Derickson going 3-for-6 with four runs, five RBIs, a pair of doubles and her first home run as a Greyhound
- McNamee was 3-for-7 with two runs, three RBIs and a double while Silberman collected three hits with two RBIs and a run
- Morgan had a 2-for-4 day with three runs and an RBI while Holtje had two hits and three runs and Hoffman added two hits, two RBIs and a run
- Chloros contributed two hits, two runs, an RBI and a double while Andrews posted a hit, two runs, an RBI and a double
- Wariwanchik recorded a hit, two RBIs and a double while Farrell had a hit, a run, an RBI and a triple
