Greyhounds Split at Rival Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at rival Muhlenberg College Tuesday, winning the opener, 4-0, and falling, 2-1, in the second contest.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at rival Muhlenberg College Tuesday, winning the opener, 4-0, and falling, 2-1, in the second contest.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a solo home run to left center by senior shortstop Samantha Derickson, her team-leading third homer of the season. The home run was also the first hit at the Mules new on-campus field
  • The Blue & Grey added a run in the top of the fourth frame to make it a 2-0 edge. Freshman designated Shauna McNamee drew a leadoff walk before freshman Nicole Giglio came into pinch run. Junior second baseman Emma Grace Pachkowski moved Giglio into scoring position with a groundout before senior third baseman Sydney Andrews ripped an RBI single to center as Giglio raced home
  • Moravian added two runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-0 advantage. Senior catcher Marcie Silberman drew a lead of before junior Cassandra Farrell came on to pinch run. Freshman left fielder Natalie Chloros doubled with one out before senior pitcher Sarah DeStefano put down an RBI sacrifice bunt that scored Farrell, and Chloros raced home on a throwing error on the play
  • DeStefano started in the circle and allowed just two hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts in her first shutout of the season

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second game as well as Silberman led off the inning with a solo home run to center field. It was Silberman's second homer of the season and 38th of her career
  • Muhlenberg scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to move ahead 2-1
  • Junior Kyra Holtje made the start in the circle, and she posted eight strikeouts in the contest while allowing a pair of unearned runs on seven hits and no walks

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian collected 13 hits in the two games with Chloros going 3-for-5 and scoring once
  • Holtje and Andrews both had two hits with Andrews driving in a run while Derickson and Silberman each hit solo home runs
  • McNamee, Pachkowski, DeStefano and junior center fielder Shayla Morgan all had one hit with DeStefano adding an RBI
  • Farrell and Giglio each scored once
  • Muhlenberg received votes in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association/GoRout Division III Top 25 Poll
