Holtje’s Walk-Off Homer Gives Moravian Sweep of Catholic
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad posted a sweep of visiting The Catholic University of America in dramatic fashion, winning 7-1 and 4-3 on a walk-off homer in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field Saturday.

How It Happened – Game #1
- The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman left fielder Natalie Chloros led off with a walk before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Sydney Andrews. After junior designated player Kyra Holtje walked, a wild pitch moved up both runners. Senior shortstop Samantha Derickson hit an RBI infield single to score Chloros for the lead
- The Blue & Grey added two runs in the bottom of the second to stretch the edge to 3-0. Senior right fielder Madison Berning and junior center fielder Shayla Morgan drew walks before junior Madelin Cooper came into pinch run for Berning. Andrews eventually connected on a two-RBI double to score Cooper and Morgan
- Moravian tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-0. Sophomore first baseman Kaley Hoffman led off with a double and scored on an RBI fielder's choice bunt from Morgan
- The Hounds pushed two runs home in the fifth for a 6-0 advantage. Holtje reached on an error while senior catcher Marcie Silberman was hit by a pitch. After freshman Nicole Giglio came into pinch run, the pair pulled off a double steal. Senior pitcher Sarah DeStefano ripped a two RBI single that chased Holtje and Giglio home
- The Cardinals got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth frame
- The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with a run in the home half of the sixth. Andrews drew a two-out walk while Holtje singled and Silberman walked to load the bases. Derickson followed with an RBI walk to push Andrews home
- DeStefano made the start in the circle and had five strikeouts for her eighth win of the season
How It Happened – Game #2
- The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the second contest. Derickson led off the frame with a double and raced home on an RBI single from Hoffman
- Catholic scored twice in the top of the fifth to move ahead 2-1
- Moravian countered in the bottom of the sixth with a run to knot the score at 2-2. DeStefano connected on a lead-off triple and scored on an RBI double by Hoffman
- The Cardinals moved back on top, 3-2, in the top of the seventh with a run
- The Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with the victory. Andrew drew a leadoff walk before Holtje ripped a two-run homer to left field for the win. It was Holtje's second home run of the season and sixth of her career
- Holtje started in the circle and had one strikeout in 4.2 innings of action while senior Natalie Otto earned the win in relief with three strikeouts over the final 2.1 innings
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian registered 15 hits in the two games with DeStefano going 3-for-7 with a run, a triple and four RBIs
- Andrews was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBIs while Hoffman went 3-for-6 with a run, two RBIs and a double
- Holtje picked up two hits, two runs, two RBIs and a homer while Derickson added two hits, two RBIs and a run
- Sophomore catcher Sydney Scarpato was 2-for-2 while Chloros, Giglio, Morgan and Cooper each scored once
